British Healthcare technology company, Huma, analyzed data from UK biobank of 88,926 adults. The data included their demographics, lifestyle and health collected over a period of 6 years. These adults also wore accelerometers for 7 days straight with which researchers at HUMA could identify their sleep/wake cycles. During an average follow up period of 6 years, 3,172 volunteers experienced strokes or heart attacks. Majority of these people had a bedtime of past midnight or before 10 pm. The data revealed an ideal time for falling asleep was between 10 pm and 11 pm. Adults falling asleep between 11 pm and midnight had a 12% increase in risk for heart disease. Adults falling asleep past midnight had a 25% increase in risk for heart disease. In addition, falling asleep earlier than 10 pm was associated with a 24% increase in heart disease. In adults who slept after midnight, women were at higher risk for heart disease. In adults who slept before 10 pm, men were at higher risk for heart disease.
