Is Egyptian Cotton really the best cotton?

Egyptian cotton has always been advertised as luxury bedding. But what makes it luxurious and is it really all that it claims to be?

The origin story of Egyptian cotton is really based in truth. But with rise of retail giants and advertising industries, the truth has been stretched into myths. So, let’s get to the bottom of this.

Egyptian cotton — The Truth:

Egyptian cotton comes from cotton plants called Gossypium barbadense. This species of cotton flourished along river Nile in ancient Egypt. The soil here had an inherent chemical composition that was especially suited for growing cotton. Cotton grown in optimum conditions tend to produce long fibers. These long staple cotton fibers produce the softest and most durable fabric.

Egyptian cotton — The Myth:

Back in the days, Egyptian cotton was rightly labeled as the premium cotton. But there’s not as much transparency today in what is truly considered Egyptian cotton. Today bedding company label any cotton that’s produced in Egypt (long or short fiber) and any cotton that comes from Gossypium barbadense (regardless of country or fiber length) as Egyptian cotton. A consumer paying extra for Egyptian cotton assuming it is synonymous with long staple cotton is being misled. So, a bedding advertised as Egyptian cotton does not guarantee a superior product

What to look for in Cotton products?

What defines a high quality, smooth, and durable cotton is its fiber length. Today with science and technology, long staple cotton is grown in many different countries and harvested from many different plants. Small research into a bedding company’s cotton source can shed light on its fiber length. Here, at Sleep L.A.B we are proud of our cotton supplier — KGlinens. With long staple cotton sourced from Gossypium barbadense they are Egyptian cotton certified despite being produced in India. But it’s the fact that KGlinens uses biomass to produce some of the best quality long staple cotton fibers that we are proud of. It’s the quality of the product and the quality of its production that makes us proud.
